Infrared vs Traditional Sauna: What’s the Difference?
Not all saunas work the same way. Infrared and traditional saunas both use heat, but they deliver it differently — which changes the temperature, feel and overall experience. Before we officially open, here’s a simple guide to the difference between the two.
How infrared sauna works
Infrared saunas use infrared light to warm the body more directly, rather than relying only on very hot air to heat the space around you. Because of this, infrared saunas usually operate at a lower air temperature than traditional saunas while still creating a deep, warming experience.
For some people, that lower-temperature environment feels more comfortable and easier to tolerate, particularly if they don’t enjoy the intense heat of a traditional sauna.
How a traditional sauna works
Traditional saunas heat the air inside the room, usually using a heater and sauna stones. The hot air then warms the body, creating the classic high-temperature sauna experience.
Traditional saunas generally run hotter than infrared saunas, and the heat can feel more intense. Water can also be added to heated stones to increase humidity, depending on the sauna setup.
Why are the temperatures different?
The main difference comes down to how the heat is delivered. Infrared saunas use infrared energy to warm the body more directly, while traditional saunas first heat the surrounding air. That’s why traditional saunas typically need a much higher room temperature.
Which one might suit you?
It really comes down to the type of experience you prefer.
If you enjoy a gentler environment and prefer a lower air temperature, an infrared sauna may be a better fit. If you like a hotter, more traditional sauna experience, a Finnish sauna may suit you more.
There’s no need to choose one permanently, either. Many people enjoy alternating between the two depending on how they’re feeling, their recovery goals, or simply the kind of heat they prefer that day.
